I actually know of a former prosecutor from Florida who got in trouble with this. It can be a temptation I suppose, but if you are in the position, it is better to think that everyone is watching you so you don’t make a mistake.

Regardless of the jurisdiction you are in, tampering with evidence in a criminal investigation is a serious offense that can result in severe consequences for the individuals involved. Some possible consequences include:

Criminal charges: Those found guilty of tampering with evidence may face criminal charges, which can vary depending on the jurisdiction and the specific circumstances surrounding the case. Possible charges can range from obstruction of justice to tampering with physical evidence, perjury, or even conspiracy.

Imprisonment: If convicted, individuals involved in tampering with evidence may face imprisonment. The duration of the sentence can vary depending on the severity of the offense, the impact on the investigation, and the defendant's criminal history.

Fines: Tampering with evidence can lead to hefty fines, which aim to deter individuals from engaging in such activities. The amount of the fine can vary based on the jurisdiction and the severity of the offense. These will be in the thousands, not hundreds of dollars.

Loss of integrity and credibility: Tampering with evidence undermines the integrity of the criminal justice system. Those involved will likely face a loss of credibility and trust, which can negatively impact their personal and professional lives. They may also face difficulties finding employment in the future. In the case of the former prosecutor, it didn’t end well.

Professional consequences: If the individuals involved are professionals in the legal or law enforcement fields, tampering with evidence can have severe professional consequences. They may face disciplinary action, such as suspension, termination, or revocation of professional licenses.

Additional legal charges: Tampering with evidence can potentially lead to additional charges if it obstructs justice or interferes with the investigation in other ways. This can further compound the legal consequences faced by the individuals involved.

It is important to note that the consequences for tampering with evidence can vary based on the jurisdiction and the specific circumstances of the case. It is best to consult legal professionals or relevant legal statutes to understand the specific repercussions in a particular jurisdiction. So you’ll want to talk to a lawyer if you need legal advice. I’ve said before, I’m not a lawyer. If you need a lawyer you can, of course, try this one if you’re in Utah.
