How common is it for people to file for bankruptcy more than once?
I’ve seen some people file bankruptcy several times. We’re talking more than 5 times.
So, it’s not uncommon for people to file for bankruptcy more than once. According to the American Bankruptcy Institute, nearly 10% of all bankruptcy filers file for bankruptcy more than once and my own personal experience shows that this is the case.
Also, you should know that there are negative consequences to filing multiple cases. At least in Utah, the court will mark your file as a “repeat filer” if you file several cases. You can also lose protection from the automatic stay if your file more than twice in a 12 month period.
Make sure you speak with a bankruptcy lawyer if you are going to file bankruptcy. This firm will do free consultations.
