My position on the implementation of divorce is that it should be made more accessible to those who need it. You probably shouldn’t have to contact a divorce lawyer to get divorced. There are many couples who, while they may not come to a decision lightly, feel that their relationship no longer works for them and decide to end it in order to pursue better lives.

We live in a country that prizes individualism, opportunity and freedom. We want people to be able to do what makes them happy and are willing to let people make their own decisions about how they live their lives. However, we are also a country that values tradition and stability, which is why divorce only became legal in all states in the 1970s.

It's hard to advocate for something like this without knowing the full extent of the social costs of divorce. A study by Stephanie Coontz shows that while divorce rates had decreased from their peak in the late '70s, they are once again on the rise as women have become more financially independent and able to support themselves if necessary. She also showed that there is little evidence of an increase in promiscuity or adultery when divorce rates are on the rise, but rather more evidence that these were already happening at high levels and continued after the legalization of divorce.
